Assistants – £30 – £33 per hour
Therapist – £47 – £52
Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) working in a college setting playing a critical role in supporting students with communication and/or swallowing difficulties to succeed academically, socially, and personally.
Below is a breakdown of the roles and responsibilities in this environment:
1. Assessment and Identification
-
Evaluate students with suspected speech, language, communication, or swallowing difficulties.

Conduct standardized and informal assessments to identify specific needs.
-
Participate in multidisciplinary assessments (e.g., with educational psychologists or special educational needs coordinators).
2. Therapy and Intervention
-
Develop and deliver individual or group therapy sessions targeting:
-
Speech clarity
-
Language comprehension and expression
-
Social communication skills (pragmatics)
-
Voice and fluency (e.g., stammering)
-
Swallowing and feeding (if needed)
-

Create personalized communication strategies and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) plans for students with complex needs.
3. Collaboration and Support
-
Work closely with:
-
Teachers and tutors to adapt curriculum delivery.
-
Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs) to develop support plans.
-
Learning support assistants (LSAs) to implement communication strategies in class.
-

Provide training and guidance to staff on communication-friendly teaching practices.
4. Advocacy and Inclusion
-
Advocate for students’ rights to accessible communication and support within college.
-
Promote inclusive learning environments for students with communication challenges.
-
Contribute to the development of Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs).
5. Monitoring and Evaluation
-
Regularly monitor students’ progress and adjust interventions accordingly.
-
Keep detailed documentation and reports for academic and clinical records.
-
Provide feedback to families, staff, and external agencies as appropriate.
6. Health and Safeguarding
-
Identify and manage risks related to eating, drinking, and swallowing (dysphagia) in collaboration with health teams.

Follow safeguarding protocols and work as part of a multi-agency team when necessary.
