Job Opportunity: Counselling Tutor in North East London

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Counselling Tutor to join our team and deliver the Level 4 Diploma in Integrative Counselling at our Further Education college in North East London. This course is accredited by CPCAB and is a significant part of their programme of accredited courses. The vacancy is part of a planned expansion of their Counselling programme, and additional teaching opportunities may become available in subsequent years.

Position Overview:

  • Role: Sessional Counselling Tutor
  • Schedule: Wednesday, 10:00 – 17:30

Candidate Requirements:

  • Experience:
    • Demonstrated experience in teaching counselling courses, preferably at the Further Education level.
    • Proven track record of effectively engaging and supporting students in their learning journey.
  • Qualifications:
    • Trained in Integrative Counselling, with a strong emphasis on psychodynamic approaches.
    • Relevant professional qualifications and memberships (e.g., BACP, UKCP).
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
    • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage course materials and student assessments effectively.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Passionate about counselling and committed to the professional development of students.
    • Adaptable and flexible, with the ability to respond to the varying needs of students.
    • Collaborative and able to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Play a proactive role in all organisation-wide initiatives and developments to enhance and improve our work.
  • Identify students, members, or clients who may be at risk of harming themselves or others and invoke emergency procedures or referrals where necessary, ensuring that duty of care responsibilities are discharged at all times under our safeguarding duties.
  • Deal with all matters sensitively and discretely, abiding by relevant confidentiality and data protection policies.
  • Help maintain a safe working environment by attending training as necessary and carrying out responsibilities with due regard to the organisation’s Equal Opportunities and Health and Safety Policies.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as may be expected as part of this role and in line with the scale of the role.
  • Participate in training needed for the role, identify training and development requirements, and attend an appraisal and review each year.

Job Description: The tutor will be expected to:

  1. Take responsibility for planning the course in conjunction with other tutors, including a mixture of theory, skills work, and experiential learning, within the framework of Centre policy and practice.
  2. Teach the course, including facilitating a personal development group.
  3. Act in a reliable and professional manner at all times.
  4. Devise methods of working that will suit all students.
  5. Assess student progress throughout the course and provide feedback to students.
  6. Attend departmental meetings.
  7. Carry out administrative tasks required of the tutor (e.g., record-keeping and end-of-course evaluation).
  8. Work with digital technologies in their teaching practice, including online course delivery via Zoom or similar platforms, or be willing to undertake training to develop their skills in this area.

Person Specification: Successful applicants will:

  1. Be currently in practice as a counsellor, with at least 3 years’ experience.
  2. Be either accredited as a counsellor or eligible for accreditation with the BACP or registered with the UKCP.
  3. Hold the correct qualifications.
  4. Have proven experience in adult education or relevant experience in leading groups of adults from various backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the ethos of adult education.
  6. Have a recognised qualification in teaching adults or be committed to acquiring a qualification in the next two years.
  7. Know how to structure and deliver a course, and how to monitor and evaluate it.
  8. Have the following teaching skills:
    • Good communication skills
    • Ability to work with mixed ability groups
    • Strategies for assessing student progress and achievement
  9. Experience of working with digital technologies in their teaching practice, including online course delivery via Zoom or similar platforms, or a willingness to undertake training to develop their skills in this area.
